Day 87 of 100 Days

Sunday, 28th March 2021

There was cricket again today, and it was absolutely thrilling! India posted a very good but chaseable score of 329 and after a very heroic battle, where our openers were unable to get started, we went on to lose by just seven runs! Sam Curran put in an amazing shift with 96*, and almost won it for us, but didn’t quite manage it. It went down to the final over. It put me in a great mood for my Shout shift, but this evening's shift was quite a difficult one...

What: Crisis volunteering
Organisation: Shout 85258

It’s a bit of a sporty day today because there was also a very lively Grand Prix at the same time as the cricket, and we also had some entertaining snooker! I decided to do my Shout shift in the kitchen with the evening session of snooker on in the background. Snooker relaxes me in the same way that cricket does. I find it quite calming. Ronnie O'Sullivan ended up losing to Neil Robertson (whose lockdown hair is styled in the way of a late '70s David Gower)

Tonight was a tough one. I would never divulge the contents of any of my text conversations, but suffice to say, one of the people I talked to tonight was really struggling, and sometimes it can really affect you. It’s strange, because you can have some really difficult conversations sometimes and they won’t have an impact on you, but then there will be one which completely knocks you for six. It was a really tough shift, but Laura, my supervisor, was amazing, and I'm really hoping my texter is okay now. It's a shame that you can never really know sometimes, but a bit like Mary Poppins, the Shout volunteers are there to fly in and help when people need it and then go off when they have come back down to a calm place.
