Day 79 of 100 Days
Saturday, 20th March 2021
I was originally going to be heading off to Plough Lane tonight for the Dons Local Action Group One Year Anniversary, but I got a text the other day letting me know that they no longer needed me there. I took the decision to do a Shout shift as I missed a week last week and I didn’t want to leave it too long before I got back in the saddle.
What: Crisis volunteering
Organisation: Shout 85258
Tonight, I started my shift by putting on 'Blonde on Blonde' by Bob Dylan, and it was really good. I haven’t listened to him in ages, and it’s weird how you can forget how truly awesome some singer/songwriters are, even though everyone knows how good Dylan is – he’s one of those songwriters who not just has superfans, but superduperfans who are absolutely obsessed with him. I’ve been put off by Bob Dylan previously because I think he can sometimes overdo the harmonica (although I wouldn’t tell that to a superduperfan) but on Blonde on Blonde, it’s pretty minimal (either that or I just didn’t notice it because I was concentrating).
I found it quite difficult to settle into my shift, maybe because I hadn’t done a shift for two weeks, but it might also have because I was quite tired after a busy week. The Bob Dylan album certainly helped me get into it, but it definitely took longer than normal to get into a flow. Then I listened to Billy Joel, ‘An Innocent Man’ which is another safe space album for me. I grew up listening to Billy Joel, and I find An Innocent Man to be a real comfort blanket for me, so it’s great for the Shout shifts.
There was cricket again today, the final T20 of the India series. England won the toss but lost the T20 series unfortunately, with the Indian batsmen putting on a bit of a show against our bowlers. England were in it for 2/3 of the match but lost a flurry of wickets and went out with a bit of a whimper. We were chasing 224 runs, and managed a respectable 188 runs, but it was difficult once they lost Malan, and we just tumbled. Oh well. There are three ODIs next week, and then it’s not too long until the India Premier League – yay!
