#100Days of Volunteering

Starting on 1st January, 2021 I am undertaking a journey to do 100 days in a row where I do something for someone else. I might be volunteering for a crisis line, or planning an event for a charity or even just doing some keyword research for an AdWords account.

As I will be volunteering daily, I will upload these posts as soon as I can. Some of my volunteer shifts take place in the evening (especially when I am juggling childcare) so some may be posted the next day, perhaps later...

Day 100 of 100 Days

Saturday, 10th April 2021

Here it is, D-Day! Day 100! I’ve hit my century! I have tonned-up!

I’m very pleased with my progress, and along the way I’ve hit some really great milestones. I’ve helped raised a fair bit of money for some charities, I’ve talked to a lot of people both publicly and confidentially, I’ve been appointed a trustee at an amazing organisation and I feel like I’ve really helped a lot of charities. I'm now looking forward to reading back on what I’ve been doing in the last 100 days, because, to be honest, there are things that have happened that I certainly will have forgotten about.

Day 99 of 100 Days

Friday, 9th April 2021

My penultimate day! In amazing news, the IPL started back up today, so I didn’t have too long to wait with no cricket (although the South Africa v Pakistan tour has been quite entertaining). I can’t believe tomorrow is my last day of 100 days of volunteering. We’re visiting my partner’s parents to sit in their garden tomorrow, then I’m going to do a Shout shift when we get home.

Day 98 of 100 Days

Thursday, 8th April 2021

Today, I was in and out of the garden with my son, but during lunchtime I was able to check-in on some Google AdWords accounts, set-up some ads and tweak some conversion code...

Day 97 of 100 Days

Wednesday, 7th April 2021

I had a reasonably quiet day with my son today which was really nice. I even managed to cut his hair, which is no mean feat – before last month, we hadn’t cut his hair for almost two years, but have managed to find a way to do it through bribery. Volunteering-wise, I had a quick catch-up with Chris from Wimbledon in Sporting History in the morning, but it was all about the evening on #Day97 because of QUIZ NIGHT!

Day 96 of 100 Days

Tuesday, 6th April 2021

Today felt quite constructive. I was kept busy looking after my son, but I also managed to squeeze in a couple of tasks. We got out early doors for a visit to the park which meant we could leave my partner to concentrate on his work. The only problem is, it’s still freezing at the moment. At least we got out for a walk though.

Day 95 of 100 Days

Monday, 5th April 2021

95 Not Out! It was meant to snow today – and it did. April has been massively out of character so far, and I’m not used to these types of temperatures and snow in my birthday month. For a bit of sunshine, I switched on Sky Cricket and they were showing reruns of the IPL from four years ago. It was still quite thrilling (if you like cricket). The IPL restarts this Friday, which I’m quite excited about, especially since I thought it didn’t start until Sunday. Go Rajasthan Royals!

Day 94 of 100 Days

Sunday, 4th April 2021

Happy Easter! It was a beautiful day (and hot!), so my sister was able to come and sit in the garden while my son played in his sandpit. We also had another Easter egg hunt. His detective skills are improving slightly, but he tends to be looking in the same places that we’ve hidden the eggs before… Today, I was also able to find the time to respond to my new pen pal and tell her what I've been up to.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 93 of 100 Days

Saturday, 3rd April 2021

It’s always weird on Easter weekend, because every day of this weekend feels like a Sunday to me. It always used to be the busiest weekend of the calendar in hospitality, because in the bars it was like having three consecutive Saturday nights. Sundays were always the busiest and the most fun, possibly because everyone was looking forward to a four-day week. I love this time of year though, because early spring is such a positive time of year, having just come out of the winter.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 92 of 100 Days

It’s Good Friday today! It was on the slightly cold side, but still bright enough to get out into the sunshine and hide a few mini eggs in the garden for my son to find. It very apparent that he’s lamentable at hunting for eggs, and even when we drew him a map, he still had trouble finding them because he gets so excited. I absolutely love Easter with him because of this though, as he is just hilarious.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 91 of 100 Days

Thursday, 1st April 2021

Feeling like the slight April Fool becuse the auction is still rumbling along! It seems to be lasting forever which is making me wonder if it’s Groundhog Day and not 1st April. I've learned so much by doing this, so I'm weirdly looking forward to my next auction to see if I can't actually put all my learnings into practise.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 90 of 100 Days

Wednesday, 31st March 2021

90 not out! I can't believe I've made it this far. Quite fittingly, I finally received my Oval Invincibles shirt in the post! It’s a great fit, and despite the questionable design with pirated National Lottery logo and the peppermint colour which doesn’t really sit well on my pasty skin tone, it looks quite good. There can’t be that many around at the moment, and I’m really quite pleased with it.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 89 of 100 Days

Tuesday, 30th March 2021

Today, I got my first letter from my pen pal! I’m so chuffed, Lady A seems absolutely lovely. She sent me a letter, but also sent me a lovely homemade card with a bumble bee on it. I called my telephone friend today, but no answer. I'll try again on Friday...

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 88 of 100 Days

Monday, 29th March 2021

Today was an absolutely stunning day to get out early doors and go shopping for my neighbour. We’re heading into Easter this week, and my son finishes school at 12.30pm on Wednesday, so the last 10 days of my 100 Days of Volunteering is going to be quite tough with juggling childcare. If I can manage it during a Covid outbreak and half-term, I’m sure I can manage it for 10 days. It’ll just mean more evening work and stealing some time during lunch and tea times.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 87 of 100 Days

Sunday, 28th March 2021

There was cricket again today, and it was absolutely thrilling! India posted a very good but chaseable score of 329 and after a very heroic battle, where our openers were unable to get started, we went on to lose by just seven runs! Sam Curran put in an amazing shift with 96*, and almost won it for us, but didn’t quite manage it. It went down to the final over. It put me in a great mood for my Shout shift, but this evening's shift was quite a difficult one...

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 86 of 100 Days

Saturday, 27th March 2021

We started off the day by being out of the house before 8.30am and going for an amazing walk on the common. It was beautiful, and I’m really looking forward to the weather heating up a bit, as it was still only six degrees. Clocks go forward tonight, which means that hopefully I’ll be getting up at 6.45am instead of 5.45am tomorrow morning…

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 85 of 100 Days

Friday, 26th March 2021

England played cricket again today and won! They won very convincingly by six wickets and were outstanding. I missed most of the India innings because I was at the foodbank, but it was great to watch England bat when I got home. Also, I’ve enlisted my first volunteer for The Dons Trust. I’m getting my sister to do the AFC Wimbledon live match commentary on Twitter. She loves Twitter. I personally hate it.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 84 of 100 Days

Thursday, 25th March 2021

I’m not entirely sure where today has gone, it’s gone so quickly! It was a big OAPA day, with three different plates spinning on that charity. Then, a little more news from The Dons Trust...

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 83 of 100 Days

Wednesday, 24th March 2021

It was an absolutely beautiful spring day today, and it was also a really busy day. Everything seems to have come along at once, and I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to fit in a real job (when I finally manage to get one). I have a new charity alert (sort of) within which I have an official role! It’s still volunteering, but I believe it takes me a step closer towards where I want to be.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 82 of 100 Days

Tuesday, 23rd March 2021

One year a volunteer! It’s been a year since we went into lockdown, which means it’s a been year since my freelance work dried up and a year since I decided to start this blog and be a volunteer for 'a while'. I’ve loved my sabbatical, and while I’m actively looking for work, I’m only applying for jobs that I feel that I will absolutely love. The reason for this is that I don’t want to mess-up all the hard work I’ve put in over the last year which has had a great impact on my mental health, despite how difficult this year has been in other senses.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 81 of 100 Days

Monday, 22nd March 2021

I’m on a bit of a roll with the Google certifications, and I was able to get in another couple of hours of study and pass my Google Ads Search Certification. The more I practise, the better I get, and I’m planning on putting together a training doc for my charities which focusses on the elements that they are able to use for free. I’m really enjoying this, and it’s keeping my brain very active!

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 80 of 100 Days

Sunday, 21st March 2021

Day 80! I’m really getting there! I can’t believe I’m actually 80% of the way through my challenge, and what surprises me even more is that I’ve managed to stay up-to-date with my daily blog posts and social media posts throughout the entire challenge (albeit with the odd one-day delay here and there). I haven’t posted as many regular blog posts as I’d have liked, but I do feel like I’ve been adding value to lots of charities who need it.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 79 of 100 Days

Saturday, 20th March 2021

I was originally going to be heading off to Plough Lane tonight for the Dons Local Action Group One Year Anniversary, but I got a text the other day letting me know that they no longer needed me there. I took the decision to do a Shout shift as I missed a week last week and I didn’t want to leave it too long before I got back in the saddle.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 78 of 100 Days

Friday, 19th March 2021

It was a bit of a mixed day today, with just the one volunteering job, a bit of studying, an exam and sowing some seeds for the summer. I planted a load more tomato plants (black cherry variety, in case you were wondering), and some courgette plants. I planted courgettes last year without realising that there’s such a thing as round courgettes, so was really alarmed when they came through spherically-shaped. There’s nothing like freshly-harvested courgettes, last year’s batch were delicious and plentiful.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 77 of 100 Days

Thursday, 18th March 2021

I received a lovely letter from my friend Zena today. She’s writing a letter to someone every day for the 40 days of Lent, so she must be coming to an end very soon! In it, she enclised two ranunculus seeds, which she’s asked me to plant on or after (but not before) 20th March, so that’s something for me to get on with this weekend. I think it’s a beautiful gesture, as even though I have no idea what ranunculus are, I'm looking forward to finding out. I’m more into growing tomato plants than anything else, but let’s see where I get with these!

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 76 of 100 Days

Wednesday, 17th March 2021

Happy St Patrick’s Day! I can’t actually believe that we’re in the middle of March already. The sun is starting to shine, my tomato seedlings are starting to come through and before I know it, it’s going to be Easter. Projects are now coming to a head, and it’s going to be really strange once they’re finished…

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 75 of 100 Days

Tuesday, 16th March 2021

Three quarters of the way through my challenge now! I really am starting to feel like I’m on the home strait now, and I also feel like I've come such a long way. The cricket is back on with another T20 versus India. It’s been remarkable how quickly this pitch has deteriorated – yet again – so unsurprisingly, the team that won the toss won the match. Luckily, it was England this time.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 74 of 100 Days

Monday, 15th March 2021

Today was interesting because my two volunteer jobs both focussed on digital fundraising, but they were quite different in how they aim to raise funds. One is a brand new project and the other will be completely finished by the end of the week…

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 73 of 100 Days

Sunday, 14th March 2021

Today is Mother’s Day! My son is an early riser so there was never going to be a lie-in. We ended up spending the morning in the kitchen, listening to books on CD (Zog and the Flying Doctors, Dr Seuss read by Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall) with Match of the Day and sport in the background. It was really nice with the sun streaming in the kitchen. I also made a beetroot and chocolate cake.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 72 of 100 Days

Saturday, 13th March 2021

Even though it’s been reasonably active on the old WhatsApp group today, I’ve taken a break from the DLAG auction today while I wait for Katy to do some imagery and I can upload everything and tweak the descriptions all in one go. Bristol Rovers played at home to AFC Wimbledon today and drew 0-0. Both teams have new gaffers and both teams are battling relegation – AFCW are sat at the rock bottom of League One and Rovers are one point away from the drop zone.

Day 1 1st January 2021.png

Day 71 of 100 Days

Friday, 12th March 2021

I was back at the foodbank today and had a really productive morning there. When I got home, it gave me great pleasure to get the cricket on, because we are back! England managed to thrash India by eight wickets in the T20, and it was on at a really good time – coverage started at 12.30pm. I’m feeling more relaxed already, having the cricket back…
